We have a tendency to romanticize childhood as a carefree period, but youth alone is no protection against the emotional hurts, challenges, and traumas that many children experience in their lives. Children may be asked to adjust to a new social situation or a new sibling. The uncertainties that are inherent to growing up in a complex world can make childhood anything but carefree. The ability to thrive in the face of adversity is derived from the development of resilience skills.
